Kern County National Apprenticeship Week Event Is A Big Hit With Students!

For the 2nd year running the Kern County Community College District hosted a 2-day series of workshops and lectures to over 300 Kern County High School students, well as their teachers and guidance counselors that coincided with the celebration of National Apprenticeship Week last November.

National Apprenticeship Week National (NAW) is a National Celebration that began in 2016 which offers leaders in business, labor, education, and other critical partners a chance to express their support for Apprenticeship. NAW also gives apprenticeship sponsors the opportunity to showcase their programs, facilities and apprentices in their community. The weekly events highlight the benefits of Apprenticeship in preparing a highly-skilled workforce to meet the talent needs of employers across diverse industries.

One of the issues in developing a qualified workforce is the education of our youth about the wide variety of career opportunities available to them in the construction industry. Our apprentices joined other building-trades programs at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) training facility in Bakersfield and assisted students as they got a chance to operate some shop equipment and build sheet-metal tool trays, which they got to keep afterwards, and also helped students understand the breadth and scope of the opportunities and earning potential of all the different career paths that our apprenticeship program has to offer.

We are very proud of our sheet-metal apprentices. They worked very hard in and out of the training center to help make our program shine during the 2 days of events. They also demonstrated some great leadership skills by offering peer-to-peer advice and mentoring to these students, many of who didn’t have a clue as to what they were going to do after high school.

National Apprenticeship Week celebrates the best Work-force Development System known to man!
