Kern County National Apprenticeship Week Event Is A Big Hit With Students!

For the 2nd year running the Kern County Community College District hosted a 2-day series of workshops and lectures to over 300 Kern County High School students, well as their teachers and guidance counselors that coincided with the celebration of National Apprenticeship Week last November.

National Apprenticeship Week National (NAW) is a National Celebration that began in 2016 which offers leaders in business, labor, education, and other critical partners a chance to express their support for Apprenticeship. NAW also gives apprenticeship sponsors the opportunity to showcase their programs, facilities and apprentices in their community. The weekly events highlight the benefits of Apprenticeship in preparing a highly-skilled workforce to meet the talent needs of employers across diverse industries.

Pre-Apprenticeship Class Starting Soon

The Kern and Northern Los Angeles Counties Air Conditioning & Sheet Metal Workers Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee is proud to announce that it will be participating in pre-apprenticeship training that is open to the general public. The training is being financed by The California Clean Energy Jobs Act (Prop 39) and is being spearheaded by the Fresno Building & Construction Trades Council. The grant is targeting unemployed adults and older youth(18/24) to give them a introduction to several trade unions. Once they complete the 4 week program they can apply to any trade union for a apprenticeship program or choose to attend a vocational training program. Participants will spend a week at the Bakersfield Sheet Metal Workers training center learning about career opportunities in the sheet metal trade and will also earn their OSHA 10 Hour safety certification. Participants must have a GED or HS Diploma, pass a drug screen, valid driver’s license, pass Work Keys assessment, and have reliable transportation to get to training sites. Apprenticeship Works!

Apprentices from the Bakersfield Sheet Metal Workers Training Center participated in the US Department of Labor’s National Apprenticeship Week by helping to expose the advantages that apprenticeship have over for-profit technical schools and colleges to Kern County high school students. Speaking in terms of the tuition, student debt, and earning power as one progresses through their education; Apprenticeship programs have a reputation as being a well kept secret among professionals in the construction industry.

Not since the 1980’s has construction been discussed as a viable career option to graduating high school students. Over the past few decades most high school districts have systematically dismantled shop classes, opting instead to concentrate their efforts and resources in favor of getting every senior college bound.

There’s no denying that the strategy has had some unforeseen negative consequences.

The Kern County Sheet Metal Workers’ Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (JATC) sponsored an 8-hour training course on the operation of Trimble’s Robotic Total Station (RTS) Series 873 Equipment on Saturday September 3rd 2016. The class was hosted at the Southern California Sheet Metal Workers state-of-the-art training facility located in the city of Industry California.

Trimble is a pioneer in the use of advanced Global Positioning (GPS) Technology providing reliable, accurate solutions and improving productivity in a wide range of construction jobs, and Sheet Metal Workers typically use the technology deployed in Trimble’s Field Link Software to locate and layout HVAC duct hanger-insert locations during the construction and/or remodel of buildings.

The class size was deliberately kept small with only 7 students to better ensure that each student was given quality hands-on practice with the equipment. The training was organized at the request of company representatives with Southland Industries Inc., a leading Southern California based MEP firm who will soon be employing a dozen or so Sheet Metal Workers out of the satellite training center of SMART Local Union 105, located in city of Bakersfield California.
